Winter Birding

It was warm earlier this weekend, but the temps have begun to slowly drop again, so Kieara and I got up early (for a Sunday), and took a drive down to a local lake this morning to see if there were any birds taking advantage of the good fishing weather.  We had hoped to capture Steve's earlier good fortune of seeing bald eagles, and did see an immature baldy, but he was just to skittish to pose for pictures, so I snapped the rest of the morning's show.

Most of these are taken with a 200mm manual telephoto, wide open at f2.8.  I brought a tripod but there was enough light out to snap these handheld.  Can't wait to get out there when the sun is creeping up, and the light is going to be really good coming off the water.  I've included some of Kieara's shots as well (after the photo of the lens).  As you can see she was snapping away as well.  She uses a Canon EOS 20D SLR with an autofocus 28-90mm zoom.  Click the pic to see the rest:

  1. Great photos! Looks like a lovely winter morning. I particularly like the white birds/dark birds shot - very arty. Keep 'em comin'.
